Scientists have captured images of the flash of light that occurs when a human sperm fertilizes an egg. This scientific breakthrough provides new insights and has been presented by some as reaffirming the Bible’s descriptions.
The Bible says that God gives light to every person who comes into this world. In John 1:9 it says: “This was the true light, which gives light to every man, coming into the world.” (English KVJ version: “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world“")
The verse emphasizes that every human being is created by God, and that the beginning of this life coincides with the fertilization of an egg.
In 2011, the team discovered that zinc sparks are released during fertilization in mice. It took them a few years to figure out how to image this event, but in 2014 they were able to film it for the first time and saw billions of zinc atoms being released at the moment a mammalian egg was penetrated by a sperm cell.
Using a new fluorescent sensor that can track the movement of zinc in living cells, the team observed the egg's zinc storage capacity and found about 8,000 zinc pore spaces, each with about 1 million zinc atoms ready to be released. The small “fireworks” that occur last for about two hours after fertilization.
Now, the same team has managed to film this event in a human egg at fertilization. “It was remarkable,” says team member Teresa Woodruff. “We discovered the zinc spark a few years ago in mice, and to see the zinc emanating in an explosion from each human egg was amazing.”
