When the first candles were lit in front of the Norwegian Parliament, "1000 Candles for Life" was marked for the very first time. Politicians, public debaters, influencers and committed people came together to highlight the value of every unborn child and to open a clearer and more honest conversation about human dignity and abortion. The candles that were lit that evening stood as silent symbols of hope, truth and love.
In the report you will meet representatives from Kristent Ressurssenter and Pro-Life Norway, who share their vision, experiences and hopes for the markings that will now be held.
We highlight the inherent value of the fetus from conception and point out that many young people today are seeking more knowledge and honest answers about the beginning of life. Several of those we spoke to say that many women are surprised when biological facts become clear, especially when it comes to late abortions.
At the same time, several speakers emphasized how important it is for society to provide better support for women, show greater political courage, and create communities that do not leave the vulnerable alone. We heard young politicians and public debaters express hope that a new generation is now standing up boldly, asking questions, and speaking out – even in a demanding public climate.
Another clear message that evening was that the church and congregations have an important role. We encourage the community of faith to stand together more clearly for truth and love, and to be a safe and supportive space for women and families in need. The Bible's words that life begins at conception, and that every human being is created with value and purpose, form a foundation for this work.
The demonstration outside the Norwegian Parliament was just the beginning. "1000 Lights for Life" will now be a monthly demonstration throughout 2026, and we want to invite more people to join us on the journey.
