In a time when questions about gender, identity and trans treatment are creating sharp fronts, Kristent Ressurssenter, in collaboration with Ventura forlag, is launching the book \u201cGender \u2013 given or self-made?\u201d by Marianne Brattgjerd. With a background in research and academia, the author challenges what she believes is a fundamental ideological shift in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly is gender? Is it something we are born with, or something we can define ourselves? And what consequences does our understanding of gender have for children, parents, schools and the health care system? These are among the questions Brattgjerd examines in his new book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brattgjerd has worked in academia for over 15 years and has for several years delved into issues of gender, science and the history of ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenging the bias in society<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

In the first part of the book, Brattgjerd examines how what she describes as radical gender ideology has influenced Norwegian legislation, education, and healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She questions, among other things, how children are taught about gender identity, what assessments should form the basis for medical treatment of young people, and how consideration for biological sex should be taken into account in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book also takes a critical look at the philosophical ideas that, according to the author, lie behind this development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Presenting a third way<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Brattgjerd believes that the gender debate is often locked between two extremes: that gender is solely about biology, or that it is determined by the individual's own experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an alternative, she highlights a classical understanding of the human being as a whole of body, emotions, experiences and identity. She draws lines from Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Christian creationism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 This is a book we are publishing because we believe the questions it raises deserve greater attention. Regardless of one's view of gender and identity, there must be room to examine the philosophical assumptions, discuss the research and ask critical questions, says Eivind S\u00e6trang, publishing manager at Ventura forlag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
